“Lies About Love” | Week 3
“Words Will Never Hurt Me” | James 3:1-12
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
This saying is a defensive mechanism at best and at worst, an unhelpful lie. The book of James (along with Proverbs, politics, and counselors) makes it clear that words may seem small, but they have immense power.
5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
– James 3:5-6 (ESV)
Oh, the power of words! They don’t simply affect our family or friends; they affect entire communities! What we say, how we say it, and how we receive it will determine whether our most important relationships will flourish or fail.
Join us this Sunday as we look to God’s word to inform and affect our words.
