The Bible’s main way of talking about God’s relationship to humanity is the image of a partnership. This video traces the way God entered into a series of formal relationships with various human partners in order to rescue the world through Jesus, the ultimate covenant partner.

*Answer Key Below
1.) According to the Bible, what is a covenant and who is involved a covenant?
2.) How many covenants did God make in the Old Testament? Bonus points if you can remember who the covenants were with!
3.) Why does Jesus need to come and bring a new covenant?
1.) The purpose of a covenant is to create a partnership to accomplish a goal together. In a covenant God makes promises and in exchange asks his partner, 1 human or a group of humans, to fulfill certain commitments.
In the case of the Biblical story, God has created a good world full of potential, and wants humans to be his partners to bring more goodness out of the potential! This is why God continually makes covenants with His people, even when they continually fail to keep them.
2.) God initiates a covenant relationship 4 times in the Old Testament. He does so with Noah, Abraham, all of Israel and King David.
3.) In the Old Testament, Israel breaks their covenant with God, again and again. They sin against God and fail to meet their part of the covenant commitments.
BUT God, in His great mercy takes on human flesh to become the faithful covenant partner in JESUS! Jesus offers all of us to enter into the new covenant by his blood.
